If you are thinking of replacing any of your appliances with a new, more energy efficient model, it pays to know how close the appliance is to the end of its life cycle.
Consumer Reports advocates replacing any appliance more than 7 years old, but if you are planning to replace appliances in order of their expected demise, check out this information from the National Association of Homebuilders, here are the average life expectancies of various appliances:
- Central air conditioning: 15+
- Window air conditioning: 10
- Electric water heater: 14 (longer than a gas one, which is 11-13)
- Dishwasher: 10
- Exhaust fans: 20
- Clothes dryer: 14
- Garbage disposal: 10
- Freezer: 16
- Microwave oven: 11
- Electric range: 17
- Refrigerator: 17
- Clothes washer: 13
